The Third Great Galactic War was a major galactic conflict fought between 19 BBY and 30 ABY. It is often considered the largest, costliest, and most destructive war in galactic history, due to the fact that throughout the war, no system was ever neutral.

Origins of the conflict could be traced to the Galactic Senate during the final days of the Old Republic, sometime after the end of the Clone Wars, where dissenting and prominent Senators, such as Bail Organa and Mon Mothma, secretly opposed the powers and authority that Supreme Chancellor Palpatine continued to accumulate under the guise of security and war-time measures.

The major catalyst, though, was when Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker, reporting to Palpatine that Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi had engaged General Grevious, found out that Palpatine was Darth Sidious, the one who had orchestrated the war from both sides. After a bitter lightsaber duel, and cutting down a squad of Clone Troopers led by CT-7567 'Rex', Skywalker reported to Mace Windu has findings. From there, after Palpatine had cut down Agen Kolar, Saesse Tiin, and Kit Fisto, and Skywalker walked in, Palpatine revealed his new apprentice, and his actual apprentice this whole time (with Darth Maul and Count Dooku being nothing more than figureheads), Darth Starkiller (real name Galen Marek).

PreludeEdit

The origins of the war can be traced back to 43 BBY, when Darth Plageous ordered his apprentice, Darth Sidious, to find his own apprentice. Plageous was not inclined to Darth Bane's Rule of Two, believing it a highly inefficient power structure, and wished to restore the Sith Empire to its rightful positions. Sidious searched on many worlds, before finding a young human male who was powerful in the Force named Galen Marek on Korriban. Marek's school teacher had noted that he was an extremely aggressive and territorial child, and even put several kids in the hospital. Sidious knew that living on Korriban had made Marek in-tune with the Dark Side, so he took him as his apprentice. Before he left, Sidious was about to sever Marek's ties to the past by murdering his parents, only to find out that Marek's father, Kento Marek, was a Jedi Knight. An intense duel followed, with Marek utilizing Djem So, a form Sidious was not attuned to fighting against at the time. Eventually, Sidious struck down Marek, and then moved against his wife Mallie, and performed a sai cha on her. Galen, having always hated his family for supporting the Republic, gladly went with Sidious.

Marek spent many years being trained in the arts of the Dark Side of the Force. Sidious was extremely impressed at how quickly he was learning; within two days of his training beginning, he had already mastered Force Lightning, a technique that usually took years to master. Marek grew more and more powerful with each passing minute. So powerful, in fact, that Sidious turned his goals away from Anakin Skywalker.

While Marek was very powerful, he was also a mindless beast. While this is something Sidious was looking for in an apprentice, he needed a level-headed apprentice who was as skilled in combat as he was in politics. Marek was also still young, so he needed figureheads in the meantime. First came Darth Maul, who crippled the Black Sun before being defeated by Obi-Wan Kenobi on Naboo in 32 BBY, though he survived and later joined Tyber Zann. Then came Darth Tyranus, a name used sparingly in favor of his real name, Count Dooku. Dooku was a political idealist, someone Sidious needed.

At the time of the Battle of Geonosis, Sidious was ready to send Marek on his first real mission. Marek was deployed into the arena to kill many Jedi, but the masters did not see him, so his existence remained a secret to the Jedi. Later, on the battlefield, he slaughtered many Jedi and clone troopers.

By the end of the Clone Wars, Dooku was dead, and Sidious found it to be the perfect time to initiate Marek into the Sith Order fully. On his home planet of Korriban, Marek was re-christened Darth Starkiller.

Course of the WarEdit

19 BBY

After the issuance of Order 66, both the 212th Attack Battalion and 327 Star Corps. refused to follow the order, ensuring Kenobi and Aayla Secura's survival. Many more Jedi, including young knights Andy and Katie Sammonds, Skywalker, Belle Johnson (Andy's secret girlfriend), and Shaak Ti, were rescued from the Jedi Temple by Senator Organa and Captain Raymus Antilles aboard the Tantive IV.

Following this great escape, Palpatine ordered an attack against his homeworld of Naboo for several reasons, among them to crush Senator Padme Skywalker and the Jedi she was harboring, as well as dismantle the belligerent Nubian government and send the Gungans extinct. The operation was achieved with moderate Imperial casualties, ending in the destruction of not only Theed, but the entire Nubian ecosystem following the execution of a Base Delta Zero. The Empire provided a cover story saying it was caused by Jedi terrorists possessing multiple antimatter bombs. The Republic, though, managed to splice the HoloNet feed and show what really happened. A failed coup against Palpatine followed.

The Empire traced the splicing to Kamino, where the Republic had set up its government-in-exile and comissioned a brand-new clone army. Utapau, Saleucami, Mon Calamari, and Kashyyk also joined the new government, believing the Empire a Sith-run dictatorship that would surely seek the extinction of all non-human sentient species, including the Taus, Utais, Mon Calamari, and Wookiees.

When news reached of the new government, millions of human males and females on multiple Imperial worlds sent genetic samples to Kamino however they could. Initially, once a month, Admiral Wulff Yularen, acting under the Republic as the only 501st member to defect at the beginning of the conflict but did not make his treachery known to the Empire until 3 BBY, would go to these planets, collect the samples, and transported them to Kamino. The genetic samples were a necessity, due to the diminishing amount of genetic DNA that came from Jango Fett. Shortly after the Naboo Genocide, Manaan, Dathomir, Muunilinst, and Bonadon also joined the Republic, defying Imperial rule. As a result, the Nightsisters were either evicted by force from Dathomir by the planetary government, or killed in a campaign carried out by Mace Windu to purify the planet of all dark force energy.

After locating the Republic on Kamino, Palpatine sent the 501st to crush the Republic and the Jedi. But the 501st, now known as 'Starkiller's Fist', was caught off-guard by the massive Republic fleet encircling the planet, mainly made up of Venator-class ships built at Mon Calamari. The 501st lost most of its fleet, never got the chance to land any troops, and was routed and forced to return to Coruscant, unbeknownst that Yoda had stowed away aboard one of the ships. Shortly after the battle, Palpatine sent Starkiller to Mustafar to assassinate the Seperatist Council, which had been allowed to remain in peace long enough.

On Mustafar, Starkiller rampaged his way through many battle droids and dueled and defeated Asajj Ventress (he thought he killed her, but was later proven wrong when he saw her leading a Zann Consortium droid legion). He then proceeded to brutally murder each and every single Council Member, saving Nute Gunray for last. Gunray's death was most gruesome, being cast into the lava. Shortly after killing the Viceroy, Starkiller contacted Palpatine, who was very pleased and ordered the shutdown of all remaining droid units in the galaxy. Unbeknownst to him, Gizor Dellso had reprogrammed the computer Starkiller used to fool him into thinking that he had succeeded, when he actually transferred control of all droid units over to Dellso.

All of a sudden, Anakin Skywalker landed in Mustafar, demanding vengeance for Padme and his unborn children. Starkiller, though, was actually keeping the children stashed in his starfighter. He accidentily revealed this to Skywalker, stating that Padme had just given birth to them shortly before the Genocide, and she had named them Luke and Leia. Skywalker ordered Starkiller to give him the twins in exchange for control of Mustafar by the Empire. While a tantilizing offer to Starkiller, who knew the Empire would need alot of raw materials to build the new Imperator-class Star Destroyers, he refused, stating he would train the babies in the ways of the Dark Side and make them excellent Sith. An intense lightsaber began, with Starkiller having the Force advantage, while Skywalker was the superior swordsmen.

In the end, Starkiller made the mistake of jumping off a platform at Anakin, who had the high ground, and lost both of his legs in the process. His clothes were then set alight by the heat of the lava, ravaging his body. He was plucked from the lava banks by Palpatine and placed in a life-support suit. Starkiller, though, was extremely unhappy with the suit, as it was bulky and prevented him from jumping and fighting properly, though he was still as strong in the Force. Palpatine knew of these flaws, saying the suit was temporary until a new suit could be built. The Mark II suit was completed in weeks, and fitted to Starkiller, who could now jump and fight properly, perhaps even moreso than before.

Meanwhile, while Starkiller was on Mustafar, Yoda infiltrated the Executive Building on Coruscant and had a showdown with Sidious. It ended in a stalemate, with Yoda managing to escape and find his old custom-built Delta-7, and escaped Coruscant.

After the ordeal on Mustafar, Anakin brought his children back Kamino, where he recieved word that Mustafar and Dantooine had joined the Republic. Mace Windu was sent to Dantooine to re-establish the Jedi Enclave bombed by Darth Malak during the Jedi Civil War. Yoda decreed that the twins were to begin training at age 4, and went on to state that the Jedi Code was in need of severe reworking.

18 BBYEdit

The war began major escalation in 18 BBY when the Republic began a series of attacks on Imperial-controlled Outer Rim worlds, including Mustafar and Alzoc III. The Republic also conducted a hit-and-run on Kuat, disrupting production. The Republic attempted an attack on Honoghr, but were forced to retreat when it was discovered the Noghri were using disruptors.

17 BBYEdit

Imperial spies discovered a Jedi was hiding on Kashyyk. Darth Sidious sent Darth Starkiller to find and kill the Jedi..unaware that it was a trap. When the forces approached Kachirho, they were met with a hail of fire from both Wookiees and clone troopers. It soon became clear that the jedi wasn't a previously hidden Jedi, but rather, Andy and Katie Sammonds. A major curiosity with them was that somehow, the Force had stopped them from aging, meaning they were now naturally immortal. Not only that, they were slowly becoming even more powerful than even Yoda himself. Starkiller ordered a retreat, having lost 3/4 of his force.

0 BBYEdit

Almost two decades later, Palpatine recieved an SOS signal from Geonosis: the Geonosians were rising up, and a droid fleet was attacking. Unsure how to respond, Sidious sent additional ships and troops to Genonosis. It wasn't enough. Swarms of Vulture Droids and Heyena Bombers destroyed several Imperial-I Star Destroyers.

On the ground, Geonosians and battle droids siezed the Imperial factories and began restarting the droid foundaries. Out of hyperspace came a Providence-class destroyer, under the command of the infamous crimelord Tyber Zann.

Zann sent a transmission to Palpatine: Surrender Geonosis, Hypori, Ryloth, and Saleucami, or several megaton nuclear warheads on interstellar cruise missiles will hit Coruscant. Palpatine, knowing very well the destructive power of nuclear weaponry compared to even the most powerful plasma-based weaponry, agreed, and pulled out all Imperial forces on those worlds.

The Zann Consortium revealed itself to the Galaxy when it invaded Shola, swiftly killing all Imperial officials and miners. The Consortium was well-known for corrupting planets through a variety of methods. First, Tyber Zann led a small force to neighboring Mandalore and challenged the Mandalorian chieftan to a battle to the death. The chieftan was killed, and Mandal Hypernautic shipments found themselves defenseless, and under constant Consortium. Soon, they began sending their brand-new Tartan Patrol Cruisers, mainly marketed towards the Empire, ti escort the shipments. This was what Zann wanted. He soon began hijacking Tartans, adding them to his anti-starfighter forces alongside the Hardcell transports that had been modified to serve as corvettes.

Next, Zann's must trusted associate, Urai Fen, led a small taskforce to Honoghr to subvert the Imperial officials there. They destroyed three Noghri base camps and killed Base Commander Malinth, lessening Imperial influence and allowing the Consortium to undermine the Imperial command.

Fen then saw action on Nal Hutta, where he and his force kidnapped Space Port Director Tanda the Hutt as payback against Jabba the Hutt for a hit on the Shola shipyards.

Meanwhile, a fourth faction had quietly entered the conflict. Formed through a merger of several anti-Imperial stockholding companies and the Smuggler's Union, the Rebel Alliance saw the Republic, Empire, and Consortium as 'corrupt and evil'. They had initially set up a secret base on Dantooine, but abandoned it when they were discovered by a group of Jedi students from the Enclave. The Rebels moved their base to Yavin 4, setting up in the Massassi Temples.

Around the same time that Zann was battling the Mandalorian chieftan, the CR90 Tantive IV was being pursued by the the Imperial Star Destroyer Devestator over Tatooine. Disabling the main reactor, the Devestator pulled the stricken ship in with a tractor beam. A boarding team of Stormtroopers swarmed the ship. Though met with fierce resistance from Clone Troopers, the ship eventually surrendered. Leia Skywalker, secret Jedi Knight, was disguised as an Imperial senator, and had been trained to hide her force signature. A trio of stormtroopers found her and set for stun. She shot one of the stormtroopers, before being stunned herself. Another trooper in the room cried 'He said set for stun, you idiot! He wasn't going to shoot ya!'. Darth Starkiller confronted Raymus Antilles, and attempted to get the stolen Death Star plans out of him. Previously, the Republic had learned of the construction of the DS-1 Orbital Battle Station, the Death Star, with enough power to destroy an entire planet. Antilles would not talk, and feigned being strangled to death (the clone troopers aboard the ship knew Antilles was still alive because he had protected his face from the wall when Starkiller threw him against it). After taking Leia prisoner, Starkiller ordered the ship set adrift and destroyed (a weapons malfuction aboard the Devestator allowed the Tantive IV to fight another day).Wars

During the fighting, the droids C-3PO and R2-D2 managed to escape in an escape pod with Andy and Katie Sammonds (still not aging). The twins managed to hide their bio signatures from Imperial sensors, meaning the pod escape destruction. On the surface of Tatooine, despite Artoo's insistence, Threepio went his own way, while Andy and Katie went with Artoo, writing Threepio off as a loss. Threepio was captured by Jawas, as was Artoo. Andy and Katie were offered refuge aboard their sandcrawler. While aboard, the twins even managed to get a few broken-down droids functional, for which the Jawas were extremely grateful.

The next morning, the sandcrawler stopped at the Lars homestead, where Anakin and Luke Skywalker had been for a few days since the Republic took Tatooine. It was here that Anakin requisitioned Artoo and Threepio. During dinner that evening, a call came from the Tantive IV: Leia had been taken prisoner by the Empire. They would have to find their own way off Tatooine, since the Tantive IV was forced to return to Kamino due to the presence of Imperial starships.

The next morning, it was discovered that Artoo had wandered away from the homestead. Luke, Anakin, Andy, Katie, and Threepio set off to find the wayward little droid, eventually finding him in the Jundland Wastes. Suddenly, they were ambushed by Tusken Raiders. Luke was knocked out, Anakin and Artoo took cover in a small cave, Threepio fell backwards in fear and had his right arm disconnected, and Andy and Katie stood their ground and killed several Tuskens before retreating. While hiding, Anakin and Artoo heard a krayt dragon call, but only saw a cloaked figure. It still managed to startle the Tuskens, who ran away. The cloaked figure then revealed itself to be Obi-Wan Kenobi, who had been hiding on Tatooine for severa months as a spy, gathering information on Imperial bases.

Arriving in Mos Eisly, the group managed to get transport off-world by Han Solo, a smuggler friendly to the Republic, and his co-pilot Chewbacca, an old friend of Yoda's. Managing to break the Imperial blockade, Obi-Wan sensed that Leia had been captured, and told Solo to set course for Alderaan, where the Death Star would show up next.

Meanwhile, the Death Star had arrived at Alderaan. Starkiller had tried all he could to get the location of the Republic base out of Leia. It was in vein, though. Even if they found the Republic's homeworld, all leadership was off-planet with the main fleet for security reasons. Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin decided to go ahead with a demonstration of the Death Star anyway. Bail Organa, a prominent leader of the Galactic Republic's government-in-exile, was visiting Alderaan at the moment. When asked where the base was, Leia lied and said it was on Hypori. Tarkin went ahead with the destruction of Alderaan, anyway, stating he knew that Hypori was well under Consortium control, but gave her credit for trying to destroy Tyber Zann and his associates, anyway. Within seconds, Alderaan had been obliterated.

Arriving in the Alderaan system, the crew of the Millenium Falcon found they were too late, but still spotted the Death Star. Knowing very well that Leia was aboard the station being held prisoner and scheduled for execution, they landed and hid from the scanning crew. Disguised as stormtroopers, Luke and Han pretended that Chewbacca was a priso

ner, and took him to prison block AA-23, where Leia was being held. Obi-Wan, meanwhile, went to disable the tractor beam, Anakin sought Starkiller, and Andy and Katie went to sabotage the superlaser. Artoo and Threepio were told to 'lock the door, and hope they don't have blasters', which Threepio didn't find very re-assuring.

Eventually, an intense firefight broke out in prison block, Luke was reunited with Leia, and the four heroes escaped down a garbage chute, narrowly avoiding being crushed by a garbage masher. Alerted to the presence of Jedi and Republic sympathizers aboard the station, the Imperials began a large search. This was just what Andy and Katie were waiting for. The two ageless teens went on a rampage through the station, killing many stormtroopers and officers, destroying many droids, and disabling or destroying many turbolaser batteries in advance of the Republic's attack.

Obi-Wan managed to shut down the tractor beam, and discreetly fling a pair of stormtroopers into a pit with the Force. Anakin finally managed to find Starkiller, and an intense lightsaber duel began. After some time, the two were in full view of stormtroopers who had come to watch, not to mention the other heroes. Seeing his chance to escape, Anakin disoriented Starkiller, rushed past the stormtroopers, and got onboard the Falcon.

On the way out, the ship encountered a group of Rebel X-Wings, all of which Andy and Katie shot down. Unbeknownst to them, the Empire had hidden a homing beacon onboard, but it came dislodged and re-attached itself to a Nebulon-B frigate bound for Yavin.

Returning to the Republic fleet massing near Muunilinst, the Death Star plans were safely delivered. The next day, Jan Dodonna, head of the military and captain of the flagship Freedom, briefed the hundreds of clone pilots on the mission. An analysis of the plans showed a weakness in the station's design: an unprotected auxillary exhaust port leading straight to the main reactor of the station. A precise hit would cause a chain reaction that would destroy the main reactor, and the station as a whole. The port was ray-shielded, so they would have to use proton torpedoes. One pilot saw the whole thing as 'impossible, even for a computer', and many other pilots doubted the battle plan. Intelligence soon found that the Rebel Alliance and Zann Consortium were planning similar attacks.

The Rebel Alliance made the first strike. 18 X-Wings, 7 Y-Wings, and 2 A-Wings were launched from the hidden base on Yavin IV (the Jedi Temple was also located here, one of the main reasons the Republic wanted to destroy the station). The Imperials soon realized their turbolaser batteries were ineffective against the small, fast Rebel fighters. Tarkin refused to launch the station's vast TIE fighter wings, but Starkiller overrode his command and ordered all TIES be launched.

Around the same time the TIE fighters went in on the Rebel fighters, the Republic and Consortium arrived as well. The battle become a four-sided free-for-all, as TIEs, ARC-170s and V-Wings, and Vulture Droids were shot down left and right.

Soon, the Republic, Rebels, and Consortium began making trench runs towards the exhaust port. At least three runs were made by the Rebels. The first was made by Gold Squadron, under the command of Jon Vander. Starkiller took control of his experimental TIE Advanced x1, and shot down Tiree and Vander, before shooting down Davish Krail as well. Garvin Dreis was next to make the run with Theron Nett and Puck Naeco. Nett was shot down by Starkiller, while a Vulture Droid swooped in and killed Naeco. Dreis made the shot, but it only impacted on the surface.

Meanwhile, the Republic and Consortium were hotly engaged in ship-to-ship combat near the Death Star. One Providence-class carrier tumbled toward the Death Star, causing a cataclysmic chain reaction.

The Rebels attempted to make their third and final run. Dreis had lost his starboard engine after being hit by the same Vulture droid that had killed Naeco. With his last words, he told the last members of Red Squadron that had not been shot down to make the run. Reds 2 (Wedge Antilles), 3 (Biggs Darklighter), and 11 (Wenton Chan) were tasked with the run. Going down the trench, Starkiller was about to kill Antilles, when a stray shot from Andy's Eta-2 hit him and disabled his weapon systems, forcing him to retreat. Antilles was hit and forced to disengage (ultimately becoming the only surviving Rebel pilot of the battle). Darklighter was killed by Leia, and Chan managed to get a shot off, but it also impacted on the surface. It soon dawned on the Rebels that they needed a Force-sensitive pilot..and force-sensitives were something they didn't have and actually rejected.

After Chan made the shot, Dreis was shot down by Mace Windu, and crashed into the surface of the Death Star, ironically taking out a key power conduit needed to power the turbolasers in the trench. The Consortium made its first run soon after, sending Heyena Bombers down the trench. TIE Fighters managed to shoot down all of the Heyenas, but more and more bombers came until it became a swarm. The bombers that did reach the trench found that their bombs were ineffective, impacting on the surface one after another. Second and third runs did no better.

Having destroyed almost all of the Consortium ships, the Republic moved in full-time on the station, destroying many, many power conduits and damaging the superlaser. One final run was made by Andy, Katie, and Belle Johnson (Andy's girlfriend). Starkiller managed to return to the battle, and Katie and Belle faked their deaths by jettisoning the spare parts canisters. But Andy thought they were really dead, and was about to pull out until they revealed they were fine. Andy continued down the trench, and was about to be shot down by Starkiller, when Anakin destroyed one of his wingmen. The other wingman panicked, collided with Starkiller, and sent Starkiller's TIE tumbling uncontrollably into space. Andy then took the shot, which entered perfectly. Seconds later, the Death Star was destroyed.

The battle was an overwhelming victory for the Republic. In a way, though, it was a victory for the Rebels as well, since their base had been saved. But the Republic decided now was the time to openly engage the Rebels, rather than focus on the Empire and Consortium.

Several days after the battle, Tyber Zann personally entered the Yavin system with a fleet to scour the debris field for data pods ejected shortly before destruction. The first pod was of no use to the Consortium, being nothing but mindless chatter among the Grand Moffs. The second had blueprints for the Lucrehulk carrier, which was just what the Consortium needed to complete its forces. The third had information on Palpatine's private vaults, and the fourth and final told of the Emperor's personal flagship under construction at Kuat. While finding the pods, the Consortium was engaged first by Rebel forces comprised of X-Wings, Y-Wings, and CR90s. Next, they encountered a disabled Imperial Acclamator. The Tartan Patrol Cruisers guarding the stricken ship defected to the Consortium, and the Acclamator was shortly destroyed thereafter. Next, after encountering more Rebel ships, the fleet encountered a pair of Republic Venator. Ordered by Admiral Yularen to surrender, Zann opened fire instead, forcing the two ships and their starfighters to move away. Finally, several ships of the Hutt Cartel entered the system and stole the last data pod. Managing to get it back, the Consortium beat a hasty retreat back to Hypori as an Imperial fleet entered the system and engaged the Republic forces. The Imperial fleet retreated.

Imperial and Republic raids on the Rebel base continued until it was decided to evacuate to a different planet, especially after the discovery of the Jedi Temple.

The ExecutorEdit

One month after the Battle of Yavin, the first Executor-class Star Dreadnaught, aptly named the Executor, entered service. En route to Yavin IV from Fondor to execute Base Delta Zero, the ship, now Darth Starkiller's flagship, destroyed Laakteen Depot with little resistance. The Rebels had fought for months to secure this position.

The Zann Consortium spotted the Executor while committing piracy at Kessel (which netted them R-22 Spearheads), and sent a Lukrehulk-class carrier to examine it. Starkiller decided to ignore the carrier, stating 'Tyber Zann is not worth our firepower at the moment. Hypori will get their's soon'.

As the ship bore down the Yavin system, Rebel leader Borsk Fey'lya gave the order to evacuate Yavin IV. The Imperial blockade was readied to shoot down Rebel transports, but their efforts were hindered by the Republic's Open Circle Fleet's harassment and constant interference. At the same time, though, the Republic had the same goal as the Empire. As the first transports began exiting Yavin IV's atmosphere, the Imperial Admiral, Damon Krell, contacted the Republic Fleet, proposing a truce to take down 'a common enemy'. The Republic refused, stating both the Empire and Rebellion threatened freedom. A pitched three-way battle resulted, which was broken up by the timely arrival of the Republic flagship Freedom, a large variant of the Venator boasting more firepower. Under the command of Admiral Jan Dodonna, the Freedom strengthened the Republic blockade and forced Krell to back off.

After a week, the Executor finally arrived in the Yavin system. The Republic had started 'putting boots on the ground' and landing ground forces on Yavin IV, aimed at destroying the Rebel command structure. Fey'lya and the other Rebel leaders stayed behind to coordinate the evac operation and defend the base. The timely arrival of Jedi Knights from the Academy saw most of the defensive turrets destroyed. The Republic also set fire to the forest around the Rebel base, greatly hindering evacuation efforts as black smoke blotted out the sky. Fire spread to the base, immolating many Rebels. The Empire was actually horrified by this action.

The evacuations were nearly complete. All that was left were starfighters and the Rebel leaders. Darth Starkiller had intentionally made a hole to trap the Rebel Fleet and annhilate it. But before he could open fire, Admiral Amise Griff, having not been told about the plan, came out of hyperspace with three star destroyers, crashing into the Executor. Griff was killed instantly, and massive warship was stopped cold, allowing the last of the Rebel Fleet to escape.

Modernization ProgramEdit

A year after the Battle of Yavin, the Republic Navy began suffering from maintenance issues. It was becoming clear that the ship designs dating back to the Clone Wars were aging too rapidly for training and maintenance to keep up. Therefore, the Republic began the New Class Modernization Program, aimed at creating a modern navy to meet ever-changing doctorines.

'The Great Galactic War dragged on for decades. Thousands of Jedi and Sith were slain. Countless star systems were ravaged.'
―Jedi MasterGnost-Dural — Listen(file info)[src]

The Great Galactic War, known as the Great War during the conflict and in the years afterward, was a war between the Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic between 3681 BBY and 3653 BBY, lasting for a total of 28 years. Also known as the Republic–Sith War, the conflict was ultimately the culmination of a 1300-year grudge held by survivors of the old Sith Empire against the Republic for their defeat in the Great Hyperspace War.

The war would cost countless lives and devastate worlds from the Core to the Rim, as well as having dramatic galactic consequences otherwise. The Republic economy was shattered and roughly half the galaxy would end up under Sith dominion, and the Jedi Order would withdraw from the galactic capital of Coruscant to establish a new home on their ancient homeworld of Tython.

But it would not ultimately be conclusive. While a strategic defeat for the Republic, the end of the war left both powers standing, engaged in an undeclared conflict for supremacy on numerous disputed worlds.

BackgroundEdit

'You must go where Revan did, into the Unknown Regions, where the Sith, the true Sith, wait in the dark for the great war that comes.'
―Kreia, to Meetra Surik[src]

Star Wars Second Great Galactic War

With the Sith Empire's defeat in the Great Hyperspace War, the Republic decided how to deal with their fallen enemy: Supreme Chancellor Pultimo ordered the Republic Military to exterminate all remnants of the Sith.[11] But one Sith Lord and a group of survivors escaped the Republic's slaughter of their kind and fled to the Unknown Regions. There, he re-founded the Empire, assumed the title of Sith Emperor, and created a council of other Sith Lords to rule under him. Using the power of the dark side, the Emperor kept himself alive for over a thousand years after the Great Hyperspace War, rebuilding the Empire's strength and promising his people revenge on the Republic and Jedi.[23]

The Republic, meanwhile, was challenged in a number of wars over the next few thousand years. After the war with Exar Kun, the growing Sith Empire goaded the Mandalorians to attack the Republic.[23] A group of Jedi, led by Revan, soon joined the Republic forces in their war against the Mandalorians.[24][25] During the war, Revan traveled to the ancient Sith academy on Malachor V,[26] where the final battle of the Mandalorian Wars would later take place. During his time there, he learned of the true Sith's existence in the Unknown Regions. He then used a Rakatan artifact to start a war with the Republic to prepare for the Sith Empire's invasion, resulting in the Jedi Civil War. The Republic was also burdened by the upheaval of the Kanz Disorders.[26][27]

The Sith Empire prepares for warEdit

The Sith Emperor had ordered preparations for an invasion of the Republic as early as 3954 BBY, nearly three centuries before the war began. Four years later, these initial plans were delayed thanks in large part to the efforts of the legendary redeemed Jedi, Revan.[25]

But the Empire would not be dormant in the following years. The Emperor's war preparations continued nonetheless, with only the timing of invasion postponed. Two and a half centuries of military build-up would happen before a shift to direct preparations for invasion.[11] After such a lengthy build-up, the Sith fleet had grown to enormous numbers; and now Imperial agents had begun to operate in secret, arranging alliances both within and outside of Republic space.[4]

Imperial operatives were successful in securing an alliance with the Chiss Ascendancy, as well as installing puppet governments in key positions in the Republic's Outer Rim systems. Before a shot had been fired, the Empire had already secretly brought the Belkadan, Ruuria, and Sernpidal systems of the Dalonbian sector under its control. These would prove to be vital assets for the Empire in the early days of the war.[4]

As invasion drew nearer, the Imperial Navy's war games would reach fever pitch—military exercises became a daily event. On the eve of war, the Imperial fleet gathered in key staging locations just outside of Republic space,[11] and in the year 3681 BBY, the Sith Emperor ordered the invasion of the Republic.[4]

WarEdit

Return of the SithEdit

'Horrifying reports from the Outer Rim seemed to portend the utter destruction of the Republic.'
―Jedi MasterGnost-Dural describes the Sith onslaught[src]

Fall of KorribanEdit

'Regrettably, Korriban fell back into Imperial hands without the Jedi Council even knowing about it.'
―Master Gnost-Dural speaks of the Battle of Korriban[src]

For centuries, the ancient Sith homeworld Korriban had been guarded by a vigil of Jedi and a fairly small contingent of Republic troopers. At the onset of the war this garrison was overseen by Jedi Master Kao Cen Darach and his PadawanSatele Shan.[11][28]

In a move which caught the Republic defenders completely by surprise, a Sith fleet of over 30 warships launched a massive assault on their long-occupied holy world Korriban. The Republic and Jedi defenders quickly fell to the Imperial attack, while Sith LordVindican and his apprentice Malgus battled Jedi defenders Darach and Shan on the orbital station.[28]

Shan escaped the fighting on orders from her master, but Darach was slain in a lightsaber duel by Malgus. With a minimal effort due to overwhelming force, Korriban was captured by Imperial forces and brought under Imperial dominion once more. The attack was so successful that an extended period of time passed before the Jedi Council even learned of Korriban's loss.[4][28]

Skirmish in the Tingel ArmEdit

As yet unaware of the fall of Korriban, the appearance of Imperial battlecruisers in the Tingel Arm and Aparo sector was a mystery to the Republic. Naively hoping to resolve the unexpected situation quickly, the Republic dispatched a lightly escorted diplomatic team to find out what was happening.[4]

The Emperor saw this as an excellent opportunity to begin a campaign of psychological warfare. The Imperial fleet waited for the Republic's diplomatic team to come to them, and then allowed just enough time to transmit images of their armada back to their superiors before utterly destroying them.[4]

In response to the threat, the Republic immediately mobilized a fleet to the besieged area in the Tingel Arm. Arriving in proximity to Belkadan, Ruuria, and Sernpidal, the first Republic war fleet found itself ensnared in the Empire's trap. Surrounded by Imperial warships and turncoat allies, the Republic fleet was forced to scatter and retreat to Mirial in order to avoid complete annihilation.[4]

Destruction of the Sluis Van shipyardsEdit

With the capture of the Tingel Arm and the rout of the Republic forces there, the Sith Empire turned its sights on a valuable new target: the Sluis sector. Sluis Van was the home of significant Republic starship manufacturing facilities which presented a tempting target for the invading Imperial forces.

The Imperial naval forces quickly moved on Sluis Van, which was entirely undefended with the Republic forces still scattered. Various Sith starfighter squadrons attacked the shipyards and destroyed the orbital ring that made up the station.[4]

The Sith forces continued to press, and conquered the world itself. Much as would continue to be the case as the war pressed on, the Imperial forces executed any civilian or government workers who refused to swear fealty to the Empire. The token Republic military personnel were not granted such mercy, they were simply hunted down and summarily executed as enemies of the Empire.[4]

Republic responseEdit

Despite the violence of the attacks, not all Senators were convinced of the threat they faced. Some in the Senate argued that the attackers were simply another upstart species who could be defeated if only the military could devise an effective strategy. While this faction did not control the Senate, it was enough that the body was paralyzed by indecision.[11]

The Jedi, by contrast, took more decisive action. As the ancient enemies of the Sith, the Jedi Order recognized the threat for what it was and dispatched a force to attempt to defend the Minos Cluster. The Jedi hoped that their action would spur the Republic into action, and indeed they were successful in doing so. After witnessing the heroism of the Jedi on the news feeds, lines began to form at countless recruitment centers across the Republic.[11]

As the public clamored for action, the Senate came together and began proper planning for war. Though having already faced a number of defeats, the Republic rallied to defend itself from the attack. Even as the Senate and populace prepared, the Jedi forces already active in the Minos Cluster dug into defensive positions on several worlds, including Eliad.[11]

Even as the struggle for Minos continued, the Republic attempted to counterattack in the Seswenna sector. The Empire had blockaded the Rimma Trade Route there, strangling the flow of supplies to Republic troops at Minos. While the initial attack was unsuccessful, the Republic fleet was able to regroup and break the blockade, allowing much-needed supplies to resume traveling to the besieged Minos Cluster soldiers.[11]

Battle of KorribanEdit

Three years into the war, in 3678 BBY, a rogue Sith apprentice leaked information on Imperial fleet movements to the Republic. In truth, Kressh was only interested in causing the battle in order to create a diversion so that she could pursue her own personal goals.[29]

Republic forces moved quickly to attack the Sith's holy world. A battle erupted in orbit between the invading Republic forces and the Sith garrison of starships left to guard the planet.[29]

But the Republic's first counter-offensive quickly turned into a rout, and then a crushing defeat. The Republic invasion force was overwhelmed by the Sith defenders and crushed, leaving only prisoners and the dead.[29]

Battle of BalmorraEdit

Great

Balmorra, a world renowned galaxy-wide for its droid- and military-manufacturing capabilities, was targeted for conquest by the Sith Empire early in the war. An invasion soon followed.[8]

Shortly after the invasion began, the native Balmorrans organized a resistance group to defend their world. The Republic soon recognized the threat of the Empire controlling the manufacturing capabilities of Balmorra and launched its own counter-attack as well.[30]

The struggle would become the most protracted and enduring of the entire war. Though the Republic would eventually be forced to reassign its military assets to other fronts in the war, the Balmorran resistance would maintain the fight throughout the decades of the war and even into the Cold War.[30]

Battles for the Outer RimEdit

The Sith went on to seize many worlds in the Outer Rim and the rich resources of the Minos Cluster. Battlegrounds included Ilum, Dathomir, and Manaan, the latter seeing its surface cities destroyed, despite attempts to remain neutral. The Republic was further defeated at Agamar and Utapau. After nearly a decade of fighting, Republic Intelligence estimated that the Empire controlled nearly half of the Outer Rim.[11]

StalemateEdit

'Neither pride nor foolhardiness drove the defenders' decision. They were guided by the Force. They had passed beyond the fear of death. Their glorious last stand will never be forgotten. Allusis and his men fell, but not before the Imperials were driven to retreat. The Battle of Bothawui was a draw.'
―Jedi Master Gnost-Dural[src]

Republic victories at BothawuiEdit

After a decade of conquering the Outer Rim, ending with the capture of the Seswenna sector, the Sith advanced moved toward assaulting the Mid Rim. Believing the Republic was still recovering from its losses, the Empire rashly sent an invasion force to the planet Bothawui. However, for the first time since the war started, the Republic was well-prepared for defense. AdmiralGreik had anticipated the attack and, in a risky maneuver, gathered the entire Republic fleet over Bothawui.[11] The Imperial attackers were caught completely off guard and utterly obliterated at the First Battle of Bothawui.[9]

Though it had taken ten years of defeats, the Republic had finally claimed its first significant victory over the Imperial war machine. The news of the victory proved a great boon, rekindling hope and generally increasing morale throughout the besieged Republic.[9]

The sweetness of victory, however, would be short-lived. Seeking vengeance for their humiliating defeat, the Empire sent a much larger force back to Bothawui. With powerful planetary shields in place, the Republic defenders, led by Jedi Master Belth Allusis, were able to force the Imperial forces into a ground battle.[9]

An Imperial army of 50,000 soldiers descended on the planet and engaged in one of the bloodiest battles of the war. Imperial forces lost, on average, 10 soldiers for every one of the Republic's they killed. While the Imperial commanders were forced to call for reinforcements due to the losses, the Republic defenders stood defiant to the last man–despite an offer of safety if they were to surrender.[9]

The Imperial victory was pyrrhic. While they succeeded in destroying the Republic forces, Master Allusis and his forces inflicted such damage on the invading Imperials that they were forced to retreat. The Second Battle of Bothawui was ultimately a draw in terms of material gain and loss, but the heroic sacrifice of Allusis and his troops gave Republic troops galaxy-wide a memory around which to rally.[9]

In retrospect after the war, scholars such as Master Gnost-Dural would come to identify the victory at Bothawui as the only eventual outcome of the war; that the Republic's only hope in the face of the Sith onslaught was survival, not victory.[9]

Capture of the Dread MastersEdit

In 3668 BBY, Republic warships began mysteriously disappearing by the dozens. Investigations by the Republic SIS learned that a group of Sith known as the Dread Masters were using a form of battle meditation to project terror on the crews of Republic ships, making them flee in fear.[11][30]

For thirteen years of open warfare, the group avoided compromise by consistently being on the move aboard an Imperial dreadnaught. But after learning of their existence, an elite Republic strike team led by Jedi KnightJaric Kaedan was able to infiltrate the Dread Masters' ship and capture them, as well as gathering valuable intelligence from the dreadnaught's computers before destroying the ship.

The Republic announced publicly that the strike had killed the Emperor's valued agents, but they had secretly spirited away to the Republic prison planet Belsavis when the Jedi learned that the Dread Masters were centuries old and decided they were too valuable to simply execute. The group of dangerous Sith Lords had been removed from the conflict, and would not be an operational threat to the Republic for the remainder of the war.[11]

The intelligence obtained in the Dread Masters mission would prove enlightening to both Republic Intelligence and Jedi scholars alike. The war had been on for 13 years and the Republic finally learnt that the Imperial capital was situated on Dromund Kaas, a world unknown even in the Jedi Archives. The Jedi also learned that the Sith Emperor was, as had been rumored, many centuries old and a survivor of the original Sith Empire.[11]

Battle of AlderaanEdit

Alderaan was a world renowned as the embodiment of all the principles upon which the Republic rested. This, paired with its being located in the Core, made it an ideal target for the Imperial advance. Not only would it be a key strategic position within the Core, the capture of Alderaan would be a crushing blow to Republic morale.[11]

The mission to conquer Alderaan was spearheaded by Malgus, by that point a seasoned veteran of the war, and recently granted the title of Darth. After luring Alderaan's Republic defense fleet away from the world, Malgus and his army unleashed their attack, hoping for a swift victory. Malgus was not aware, however, that the Republic had a sizeable garrison of troopers on the planet surface. In addition to being a stopover rest point for soldiers traveling from the Rim back to the Core, the elite Havoc Squad was on the planet as well.[11][10]

As on countless other worlds over the past 14 years, a desperate struggle for control of the planet erupted. The Imperial advance claimed some key early victories, such as the capture of the Alderaanian royal family, and set its sights on seizing the planet's capital city.[13]

In one of the planet's many lush forests, the force being personally commanded by Malgus was set upon by Havoc Squad. The skirmish initially appeared to be an Imperial victory, until backup led by Jedi Satele Shan arrived.[10]

Shan and Malgus dueled once more, more than a decade after their first encounter above Korriban, while Republic and Imperial troops fought each other for survival and control of the planet. Shan and the Republic troops ultimately proved victorious, driving the invading Imperial army from the planet and critically wounding Darth Malgus in the process.[10]

Despite his injuries, Malgus escaped from the planet as well, but the hour was the Republic's. In the months after the victory at Alderaan, the Republic scored a string of victories, including the liberation of a number of systems in the Mid Rim as well as regaining a foothold in the Minos Cluster.[11]

New strategiesEdit

With the defeat at Alderaan and its advance toward the Core seemingly stalled, the Empire began working on a new tactic to employ.[17] Operatives of the Imperial intelligence service recognized the potential of bringing a powerful ally into the war and set to work on recruiting them. In centuries past, the Emperor had used the Mandalorians to attack the Republic,[23] and the opportunity presented itself once more.

Imperial agents selected a powerful combatant on Geonosis and did everything in their power to aid in his rise, engaging in activities from gladiator management to outright poisoning of his opponents. As this warrior's star was in ascendance, Imperial agents began to spread the idea that he could be the new Mandalore and unite the scattered clans. Their plan proved fruitful, and this warrior was able to establish himself as the galaxy's most powerful warrior and claim the title of Mandalore–though at some point, he became a willing servant of the Empire.[17]

As the war approached its third decade, both Republic and Empire also sought to gain advantage by debuting powerful new starships and experimental superweapons. In 3665 BBY, 16 years into the war, the two militaries clashed over Hoth.[11]

Many starships from both sides were destroyed in the battle, including one carrying captured Jedi Master Wyellett. Much of the wreckage rained down on the frigid planet below, providing fertile pickings for pirates in the years to come.[30] The battle was particularly devastating to the Republic Navy, which had still not fully recovered three years later when the Mandalorian blockade began.[11]

The Mandalorian blockadeEdit

After uniting the scattered Mandalorian clans, the new Mandalore encouraged his followers to make war upon the Republic and confront the greatest challenge of all—fighting the legendary Jedi Knights. Following orders from his Sith superiors, he ordered the Mandalorian fleet to blockade the Hydian Way, the Republic's most critical trade route.[12]

With the Mandalorian blockade in place, the Republic found themselves with no raw goods or supplies to feed the countless trillions of sentients in the Core Worlds. After several pleas from the Republic, a Jedi attack attempted to break the blockade, but was soundly defeated and forced to retreat to Devaron.[12]

The Mandalorians continued the blockade, denying the Republic raw goods and handicapping the Republic's war effort. Eventually, riots broke out on Coruscant, and the Senate began to discuss the possibility of surrendering to the Sith.[15]

An unlikely hero proved to be the savior of the Core Worlds. Hylo Visz, a smuggler motivated by the possibility of great profit in a time of dire need, organized a smuggler fleet to defeat the blockade and enrich herself in the process. After loading up large freighters with resources from the Outer Rim, Visz moved them to approach the blockade and hold position close by. The Mandalorians' hails went ignored and so they moved to attack the freighters, and Visz's trap was sprung. A fleet of smuggler starships dropped out of hyperspace behind the Mandalorians and began laying waste to the blockade. The Republic SIS, who had been monitoring the situation, rushed Republic and Jedi ships in to assist in the fight.[11][15]

The Mandalorian blockade was broken, and whether during the attack or shortly afterward, Mandalore was slain. Though a new Mandalore of uncertain allegiance took his place, the Mandalorians ceased to be a military threat to the Republic for the remainder of the war.[11][15]

Battle of Ord RadamaEdit

Sometime later, Imperial forces commanded by Darth Venemal and Malgus attackedOrd Radama in the Outer Rim. The assault was an initial success, as the Sith led their forces to capture the planet's capital city. Holding their conquest, however, would prove to be much more challenging than capturing it had been.[13]

Weeks went by with no resupplies arriving for the Imperial forces. Eventually Republic reinforcements arrived in orbit and destroyed the Imperial fleet tasked there. Damage taken by one of Malgus' Harrower-class Dreadnoughts sent it plummeting into the planetary atmosphere, and it crashed into the capital city–destroying it utterly. With Republic victory certain and Darth Venemal killed, the Sith forces withdrew.[13]

Republic counter-attackEdit

After the Republic victories over the Mandalorian blockade and at Ord Radama, Republic forces pressed the advantage back into Imperial-held space. Republic strike groups made attacks on Korriban, which Malgus believed to be only feints, while a larger Republic fleet amassed over the Imperial world Ziost.[13]

Republic forces laid siege to the planet, hoping to establish an important foothold inside Imperial space. The Ziost system was within striking distance of the very heart of the Empire; both Korriban and the capital world, Dromund Kaas.[13]

After several months of fighting, Imperial forces regained the upper hand and forced the Republic off the planet.[13]

The Imperial advance continuesEdit

'You were deceived. And now, your Republic shall fall.'
―Darth Malgus — Listen(file info)[src]

With Ziost defended, the Empire once more turned back on the offensive. Malgus, personally guaranteed by the Dark Council to never again face supply shortages, turned his attention on the Outer Rim world Serenno. Malgus had learned from Imperial Intelligence that a Jedi Master, Ven Zallow, and his contingent had established themselves there. It was feared that Serenno was a staging ground for establishing a more strategic position, and so Malgus ordered one of the Empire's infiltrators, a high-ranking noble, to do his bidding. Malgus prepared to use his new agent to assassinate Zallow and begin the Jedi's undoing on Serenno. Moving quickly, Malgus ordered his agent to strike while he mobilized the Imperial fleet under his command. The mission was a partial victory. Zallow had slain the infiltrator and escaped on one of the Republic's ships, but Serenno had been taken with a minimal of effort and resources expended. Serenno did not welcome the Imperial presence, but Malgus soon put an end to any thoughts of rebellion. Assassins supplied by the Dark Council were unleashed upon the world, and massacred all those who would dare to defy Imperial rule.[13]

A few short months later, Malgus was ordered by the Sith Emperor to recapture Ord Radama and avenge the previous Imperial defeat there. Leaving nothing to chance, Malgus decided to personally command a regiment of Force-strong combatants as they moved on the planet's new capital city, New Raido. The battle dragged on for months, more bloody than the first time the powers had clashed over the planet. Jedi traps repeatedly confounded Imperial efforts, while Malgus enjoyed the bloodbath of wholesale slaughter of both sides.[13]

Near the end of the war, Rhen Var was invaded by Imperial forces under the command of the Sith Lord Darth Mekhis. The swift invasion took the world by storm and the Imperial forces devastated the troops of the Republic. Imperial victory there, however, would ultimately prove to be short-lived. The remaining Republic troops were rallied by a group of Jedi led by Satele Shan, and drove the Imperial forces back in one of the Republic's last victories of the war.

Sacking of CoruscantEdit

'It's all going to burn.'
―Darth Malgus, right before killing Jedi MasterVen Zallow[src]

With the Sith Empire's military advance toward the Core halted, Imperial tactics became far more aggressive and desperate as the war entered its third decade. Seven years after the defeat of the Empire's Mandalorian allies at the Hydian Way, the Dark Council stunned the Republic by offering the chance to negotiate a peace treaty.[5]

Fearing a ruse, the Jedi Council formally recommended that the Senate ignore the overture, but they were ignored. However, Senators and Jedi alike did agree that the war could not be won and that, if nothing else, peace negotiations would offer their war-weary troops a respite. At the Senate's request, Grand MasterZym agreed to send a contingent of Jedi with the peace delegation,[11] and diplomats from both sides traveled to Alderaan to discuss terms.[5] But the Empire's peace overture was indeed a deception.

Even while Republic and Imperial negotiators talked on Alderaan, a large Sith fleet invaded and sacked Coruscant itself, the heart of the Republic. As a team of Sith warriors led by Darth Malgus attacked the Jedi Temple and slaughtered all within, the fleet, led by Darth Angral, bombarded and invaded the planet. Once Coruscant's planetary defenses were destroyed, the Sith destroyed the Jedi Temple outright and blockaded the planet to hold its inhabitants hostage.[5]

With the galactic capital firmly under Sith control, Angral traveled down to the surface and stormed the Senate Building himself. Once inside, he personally executed Supreme Chancellor Berooken and claimed the office as his own command center for the duration of the occupation.[31]

Treaty of CoruscantEdit

'We can be certain of nothing until contact is reestablished with Coruscant. In the meantime, we have no choice but to accept the Empire's terms.'
―Jedi Grand Master Zym, to the Republic delegation at the Alderaan peace conference[src]

Faced with no alternatives, the Republic diplomats on Alderaan were forced to agree to the Treaty of Coruscant. The treaty mandated that all Jedi and Republic forces stand down from combat duties and withdraw into Republic space. It also demanded that the Republic recognize the Empire as the legitimate ruler of half the galaxy, and that the Republic cede to the Empire a number of worlds that had not been conquered by Imperial forces.[5]

While the Republic still stood, the Sith Empire had claimed a decisive victory in the war.

AftermathEdit

'Thus began the unprecedented stalemate. The Jedi reconnecting with their roots, the Republic nursing its wounds, the Sith consolidating their power in a galaxy divided between darkness and light.'
―Jedi Master Gnost-Dural — Listen(file info)[src]

The treaty forced the Republic to give up many outlying systems to the Sith Empire.

However, there were forces in the Republic that didn't accept the treaty. There were Republic troops, namely on Dantooine and Balmorra, who refused to withdraw and mutinied to continue the war while another group within the Republic, led by the Jedi Master Dar'Nala, bombed the Senate building to assassinate the Senators who supported the treaty, believing them to be Imperial spies, while also planning on ruining the treaty. Dar'Nala also orchestrated a supposed Sith attack on the Envoy in an attempt to neutralize the treaty. However, when Dar'Nala attempted to put the last phase of her plan into action, her madness was revealed to her supporters and they abandoned her, which led to her death.[8] The peace held through after this.[30]

Although his Empire was stronger than ever, the Sith Emperor no longer seemed to desire total conquest. He handed over control of the Empire to the Dark Council, who would oversee the day-to-day affairs of state, and went on to pursue his own mysterious goals as the Sith consolidated their power.[5]

By the end of the war, thousands of Jedi were dead. The Galactic Republic focused its anger on the Jedi, blaming the Order for its defeat at the hands of the Sith. Though they were still committed to defending the Republic, the surviving Jedi chose to return to their ancient homeworld of Tython in order to rebuild their strength.[5]

The end of the Great Galactic War set the stage for a Cold War between the Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic in the years that followed. The Cold War saw a number of border skirmishes and proxy wars, eventually pushing the two superpowers back into open war.[30]

Behind the scenesEdit

The term Great War is an obvious reference to the real-world Great War, which used to be the most common nickname for World War I in the interwar period. After World War II the term fell into disuse though it is still used in historical discourse.
