For a decade Vicente Amigo has been acknowledged as one of flamenco's leading guitarists, though so far his reputation hasn't spread to a wider audience in the way that (for instance) Paco de Lucia's has. Where de Lucia is baleful and severe, Amigo is warm and friendly. De Lucia's music seems to come from a hot and primitive place, while Amigo isn't afraid to introduce elements of pop or jazz. Perhaps above all, de Lucia throws down a gauntlet to his listeners, while Amigo invites them in.
Amigo brought his six-piece band with him, but it's his guitar playing that lies at the core of the performance. His opening solo guitar piece was like a metaphorical laying-out of the tools of his trade, as the fingers of his left hand flew over the fingerboard, while his right plucked the strings with steely precision. Whether he's firing off quick, single-note runs or coaxing mellow chords, Amigo's rhythmic drive never slackens.
His band members contribute an assortment of rhythmic and vocal effects (though I couldn't see why he needed second guitarist Jose Manuel Hierro), with singer Blas Cordoba slicing through the mix with his stark, rasping tone, and Antonio Ramos nudging the ensemble towards jazz-fusion territory with his nimble excursions on electric bass. Tino de Geraldo's full-scale drum kit is an innovation you can't imagine going down too well with flamenco purists.
Several pieces were taken from Amigo's new album, Ciudad De Las Ideas. Tres Notas Para Decir Te Quiero, with its comfortable melody and Swingle Singers-ish vocal effects, veered perilously close to wine-bar muzak, but Amigo beefed it up by smuggling in some bracing guitar salvos. La Tarde Es Caramelo found the ensemble getting a bit trickier, with extra layers of voices, drums and percussion.
At times, with all seven musicians at full blast, it was almost like listening to a rock band, albeit a fairly sedate one; but once again the leader's guitar kept them on course. Capable though his musicians are, it would be a treat to hear Amigo play solo.

Cerca del río hay un sendero
donde la tarde es caramelo
cerca del río yo me pierdo
me encontraré cuando me encuentre con tus besos.

Near the river there is a path
where the evening is caramel

I'll be found when I meet your kisses.

Discussion
This one was difficult. Especially caramelo. Is he referring to caramel? To candy? To color? It has always made me picture the caramel hues of a sunset while imagining lots of sweetness. LOTS of sweetness... But that's just me. There is a good discussion about this happening on Facebook.
And what do you think? Let me know in the comments below.
